By: Jalisa Jones
In a remarkable journey that defied expectations, Florida Agricultural and Mechanical University (FAMU) has secured its place in history as the 2023 National Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCU) Football Champions. Within a mere three years of joining the Southwest Athletic Conference (SWAC), FAMU has risen to the top, clinching victory in a thrilling showdown against Howard University, the 2023 MEAC Champions, with a scoreline of 26-31.
FAMU's path to glory was paved with significant triumphs, each contributing to their historic championship season. The Orange Blossom Classic on September 3, 2023, marked the beginning of their conquest as they defeated Jackson State University, the 2022 SWAC Champions, with an impressive score of 28-10. The win was a poignant moment, especially considering Jackson State's setback in the previous year's Celebration Bowl following the departure of their esteemed football coach, Deion Sanders, to the University of Colorado.
The SWAC Championship on December 2, 2023, witnessed FAMU facing Prairie View A&M University, the longest-standing member of the SWAC. In a historic matchup, the Rattlers emerged victorious, securing their first SWAC Championship and affirming their standing within the conference.
The pinnacle of FAMU's season came on December 16, 2023, in the Celebration Bowl, where they faced Howard University. In a display of unwavering determination, FAMU triumphed, claiming their first Celebration Bowl and solidifying their status as a force to be reckoned with in HBCU football.
The journey, however, was not without its challenges. FAMU experienced the nullification of three touchdowns due to penalties, adding an extra layer of drama to their victories. Yet, the team's resilience and ability to overcome setbacks underscored their championship-worthy performance.
Beyond the thrilling on-field action, the Celebration Bowl marked a historic moment as the Howard University band performed for the first time, adding a cultural and celebratory dimension to the event. FAMU's offensive prowess was showcased, with nine different receivers contributing to their success, highlighting the team's versatility.
Coach Willie, the architect of FAMU's triumph, shared his insights during the post-championship press conference. Emphasizing the age-old wisdom that "defense wins championships," Coach Willie expressed his belief in this principle, a belief that was validated on the grandest stage of HBCU football.
In a symbolic gesture, Coach Willie recounted changing shirts during the celebration—a moment marked by taking off one shirt and donning another with the inscription "God is a Rattler." This act encapsulated his faith and his profound connection with the FAMU community.
Expressing overwhelming joy, Coach Willie shared his happiness for leading the program and the impact on his family and community. His words resonated with the culmination of hard work, dedication, and a collective spirit that propelled FAMU to the pinnacle of HBCU football.
The Celebration Bowl victory, gave Coach Simmons 45 wins- the most by any FAMU coach in the first five years.
Florida A&M University's ascent to the 2023 National HBCU Football Championship is not just a triumph in athletics but a testament to resilience, dedication, and community spirit. Coach Willie and the FAMU Rattlers have etched their names in history, inspiring aspiring athletes and fans alike. As we celebrate this momentous achievement, we look forward to the continued success and growth of HBCU football on the national stage. The Rattlers have proven that dreams can be achieved and barriers can be overcome with unwavering determination and a united community behind you. Congratulations to the FAMU Rattlers—our 2023 Celebration Bowl Champions!
