If it were not for the strong, bodacious yet gentle women in leadership at my high school I wouldn’t have known anything about HBCU’s. They possessed something that I knew I wanted to have, and I wasn’t going to stop until I got it. Reflecting on the woman I am today; believe they would be proud of me.

While at NC A&T I was the Treasurer of the Sociology and Social Work Society, VP of Alpha Kappa Delta International Sociology Honor Society, a member of Queen City Aggies and a 2011 initiate into the Alpha Mu chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc.

I love to have a good time so some of my favorite experiences were GHOE, Aggie Fest and gym jams. But nothing tops witnessing Barack Obama win his first Presidency. The yard was LIT that night!

Going to an HBCU prepared me for LIFE! While at an HBCU I learned that nothing will be given to me, I will have to work hard. My HBCU prepared me to sit at ANY table and if I’m not given a seat, set up my own table! While at an HBCU I had professors who poured into me and reminded me that one day I would be in positions just like them. They wanted to see me succeed so being ordinary was NOT an option. My professors were invested in my future, they never settled for ordinary and required extraordinary. I’ll never forget the long and hard conversations that would hurt my feelings when I didn’t give my best. Today I can look back and appreciate those conversations because they made me the person I am.

I didn’t know how to prepare for college when I was a rising freshman, I am my mother oldest child, so it was trial and error. If I could give the younger me and other students advice, I would say the best way to prepare for college is to be open minded and unapologetically YOU! While in college you have a chance to reinvent yourself and cultivate your natural and undiscovered talents.

Today, I am business owner of Pursuing Peace, PLLC a mental health private practice and Trae Scoops, LLC a mental health edutainment and community organization. I am currently in school for Sport Social Work at The Alliance of Social Workers in Sports (ASWIS). During the day I hold the position of being Lead Therapist of Novant Health Charlotte IOP Program.
