“Embracing Heritage and Leadership: Jordyn Johnson’s HBCU Journey at Alabama A&M”
Jordyn Johnson’s journey to Alabama A&M University (AAMU) was rooted in her desire to embrace her heritage and find a community that reflected her identity. “I chose to attend an HBCU because I wanted to immerse myself in a culture that reflected my heritage and identity,” Jordyn explains. “It wasn’t just about receiving an education, it was about embracing a community where I could truly feel a sense of belonging. I wanted to experience firsthand the rich traditions, pride, and history that I had always seen portrayed on television but never truly felt until I became a part of it.”
At AAMU, Jordyn fully immersed herself in campus life. As captain of the AAMU cheerleading team, president of the Sigma Beta chapter of Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Inc., and a member of the AAMU Student Activities Board, she showcased her leadership, school spirit, and dedication to serving others.
Jordyn cherishes the moments spent cheering at football games, hosting campus events, and participating in service projects. “Those experiences were filled with energy, camaraderie, and pride,” she says.
For Jordyn, her time at Alabama A&M went far beyond academics. Her HBCU provided an environment that emphasized cultural pride, community, and empowerment. “HBCUs offer a unique and enriching educational experience. They allow students to connect with their heritage, explore their identity, and build a strong sense of belonging.”
Graduating with a degree in Liberal Arts with a concentration in Human Development and Family Studies, Jordyn feels confident about her future. “My HBCU prepared me for the real world by providing a supportive environment that fostered leadership, cultural awareness, and personal growth. Through rigorous academics, hands-on experiences, and mentorship opportunities, students develop critical thinking, adaptability, and resilience.”
Her advice to future students considering an HBCU? “It’s more than an education; it’s an experience that shapes you into the best version of yourself.”
